When installing fibre optic cables it is necessary to make provision for excess cable to be available should it be required to add additional users to the system, facilitate changes of direction, or repair damaged cables. These facilities are currently provided by means of manholes, which are expensive to construct, allow unauthorised access to the cable, and in general are the location where over 90% of cable faults occur. One of the main benefits of the Guarduct system is the elimination of the need for manholes, as the cable can be accessed at any point and, at the same time remains secure against unauthorised access. The boxes may also be used within manholes to protect cables in areas with heavy traffic. From time to time heavy vehicles break the manhole cover which in turn damages the cables when falling in to the manhole. The boxes offer additional protection. The standard Guarduct draw/joint/junction/slack box has four connections, catering for straight through cables, off-takes both right and left, right angle turns, junctions and housing of splice closures after repair, hence covering all the requirements of manholes at a fraction of the cost. Multiple connections can be added on request. Approximately 20 meters of cable can be housed in the box supplying sufficient cable to facilitate repairs etc. The standard box measures 600mm long, 400mm wide and 300mm deep. It is split along the centre line for easy installation of cables, in line with the basic principle of the Guarduct split duct system. The four connections are 110mm diameter and adapters are available for 50mm Guarduct ducting. Both sizes are compatible with other duct systems currently in use. Blank discs are also available to close any unused connections. Other size boxes are available on request.
